SABIAN PLAYERS GROOVE DRUMMER LIVE AT THE LONDON INTERNATIONAL MUSIC SHOW

London Jun 14, 2009

The London International Music Show (LIMS), the UK's biggest music industry show attracted thousands of players and fans to its 2009 event at the state-of-the-art Xcel exhibition centre, along the Thames in east London. In addition to being able to see and try a lot of the latest gear, visitors experienced some of today's hottest players at the Drummer Live 09 event, including...

CORA COLEMAN DUNHAM (PRINCE)
Flying in from break in rehearsals with Prince and kicking off Saturday was the fun and flambouyant Cora Coleman Dunham (Yes, that's her - along with messrs. Weckl, Bozzio, Paul, Mayer, and Mason - on the cover of the latest SABIAN What's Your Sound catalogue). With her bassist husband (also from Prince's band) and a great keyboard player, Cora put grooved seriously on Tower of Power's, 'What is Hip' and Billy Cobham's 'Stratus', as well as her own material. When the gig was done, she was gone... back to America and more rehearsals with Prince.

Cora's set up includes HHX Evolution and AAX X-Plosion crashes, Vault Max Stax (Low), an HHX Raw Bell Dry Ride, and HHX O-Zone crashes.

SOLA AKINBOLA AND DERRIK MCKENZIE (JAMIROQUAI)
Sunday saw the Jamiroquai rhythm section of drummer Derrick McKenzie and percussionist Sola Akimbola do what they do best: great grooves. Starting with an urban African groove, they quickly worked their way into fiery solos before getting back into a series of funky grooves. The lads are currently working up the new Jamiroquai album for an end-of-year release.

Derrick's set up is 14" HH Fusion Hats, a 21" HH Raw Bell Dry Ride, 16" HHX Evolution Crash, 16" AAX X-Plosion Fast Crash (he loves the contrast between the higher pitched AAX and darker HHX - both deliver the same speedy response)

Sola's set up is a 16" AAX O-Zone, 16" AAX Chinese, plus 8" and 10" AAX splashes.

TROY MILLER (AMY WINEHOUSE)
A cancellation on Saturday morning saw Troy Miller and his band appear at very short notice. One of the hot new names around London, Troy came directly from the studio, where he is working on the next Amy Winehouse album. Said our own Christian Koch: "Troy has some fantastic fresh chops and is a very dynamic and musical player." He performed songs from his  CD Forty Days.

Troy plays a 21" Vault Crossover Ride, 14" HHX Studio Hats, 18" Vault Fierce Crash, 18" AA Rocktagon Crash, and an interesting short-attack sounding stacker - 18" HHX O-Zone Crash on top of a 16" HHX Evolution Crash - a very short and punchy effect.
