Songs of Joy & Peace, the bestselling Sony Masterworks album by Yo-Yo Ma and Friends was recently awarded the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album of the year. Along with the work of Dave Brubeck, Diana Krall and James Taylor, Songs of Joy & Peace includes the playing of multipercussionist Joseph Gramley, a member of Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, a solo artist (American Deconstruction, Global Percussion) and a SABIAN endorser. "My recording for Songs of Joy and Peace took place in Shanghai and came immediately after an all-night flight," Gramley recalls. "The percussionists re-wrote a few of the parts to maximize our performance in the 90,000-capacity Shanghai Olympic Stadium. We were going for a heavy international flavor with Cajon, Snare Drum, and two concert bass drums acting as surdos. I also had to add some shimmer on top with crotales and bells to match the flutes. At the stadium premiere of the piece, entitled "Kuai Le", my crotales and bells helped cue the 90,000 flute players in the stadium. No, that's not a typo: since we were performing at the opening ceremonies for the World Special Olympics, the audience participated in the performance. What a rush! And of course, my SABIAN HHX suspended cymbals added superlative shimmer, soul, and sound !"
