In a masterclass hosted by Brighton Institute of Modern Music’s (BIMM) Head of Drums – and fellow SABIAN artist – Pat Garvey, session drummer extraordinaire Karl Brazil spoke at length on what it takes to succeed as a professional musician. He examined the role of discipline, practice, improvisation, versatility and spoke about the importance of good sound and having the proper equipment.
Karl shared a number of great tips on how to get ahead in the music industry and stressed some key professional attributes required: the importance of being approachable and friendly, punctual and prepared. He also demonstrated several approaches to performing in a variety of musical styles, using examples from albums he’s played on and artists he’s performed with, including Take That, Feeder and James Blunt.
A percussive jam with former footballer Dion Dublin was followed by a Q&A session, and the whole event wrapped-up with a prize giveaway, courtesy of SABIAN.
