For the first time in its history, the Zetsman Marimba Festival was held outside of the United States. The city of choice for the ninth running of this event was Holland’s Amsterdam. Renowned for pulling together some of the world’s most highly regarded marimba teachers and players, this intensive 16 day seminar is always well attended.
Cymbals are not the first instrument that comes to the mind of a percussionist when thinking about associations with the marimba. However, SABIAN endorser Peter Prommel, together with his colleague Harry van Meurs, delivered a session showing how playing cymbals can further the marimbist’s understanding of phrasing and other aspects of marimba technique.
Using a wide range of SABIAN’s orchestral cymbals including various models of Artisan Traditional Symphonic pairs and suspended, the students were guided through a number of exercises which saw them all given the opportunity to play the instruments on hand.
