SABIAN artists Bob Becker and Bill Cahn, along with the other members of NEXUS performed “Rituals for 5 Percussionists and Orchestra” with The Eastman Philharmonia (Neil Varon conducting) on May 5, 2012.
NEXUS, the Toronto-based percussion quartet now in its 40th season of solo recitals and appearances with symphony orchestras worldwide, performed Ellen Taaffe Zwilich’s “Rituals” in the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York as part of Percussion Rochester, a 2-day music festival in its inaugural year. Also joining NEXUS was John Beck, the retired timpanist of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. and former Professor of Percussion at the Eastman School of Music.
“Rituals” was co-commissioned and premiered by NEXUS in 2005, and shortly thereafter recorded by NEXUS with the IRIS Orchestra under the direction of Michael Stern (Naxos CD #8.559268). The NEXUS performance of “Rituals” on Saturday, May 5 was the final event in the 2012 Percussion Rochester festival, which was also co-produced by NEXUS member Bill Cahn.
“The percussionists extraordinaire of NEXUS occupied large amounts of space in back with vast arrays of instruments . . . but the key to the piece was rhythm; the men in back were the rock stars.” – CITY Newspaper
“Like so many works inspired by the NEXUS quintet, ‘Rituals’ is a colorful sound-painting of percussion, exploring timbres usually relegated to an accenting role within the Orchestra.” – Symphony Magazine
“Wherever you are, demand that your local orchestra programs this blockbuster piece!” – Frank Oteri, NewMusicBox.com
