On December 8, 2016, the SABIAN Education Network presented a webinar with the legendary David Garibaldi. The webinar was watched online by over 150 educators from various countries worldwide. Garibaldi is a living legend of drumming thanks to his work with seminal funk band Tower of Power. However, he is also well-respected as an educator, having written popular drumset books such as Future Sounds, The Funky Beat, The Code of Funk, and the new Off the Record. David has done hundreds of drum clinics around the globe and teaches privately in the San Francisco Bay Area.
SEN webinars are designed to discuss topics of interest and assistance to drum teachers, and this webinar consisted of useful and inspirational ideas for educators. Garibaldi explained his personal methods of keeping practice journals to organize his ideas for both personal growth and book development; discussed writing books, articles, and getting published; and answered attendees questions on various other topics.
SEN is a community for drum teachers, and the webinars are one feature of a package of benefits that includes invitation to SEN live events, access to the SEN website (containing the “Teacher’s Lounge” discussion forum, educator library, referral program, and database of members for networking), and personal access to both SABIAN and artists on a limited basis. SEN focuses on a participatory approach where members can share their ideas with others and ask for guidance and opinions on professional topics covering the whole spectrum of challenges facing the drum teacher.
In 2016, SEN hosted webinars with Mark Schulman, Jim Riley, Mark Guiliana, Stanton Moore, David Garibaldi, Billy Cobham, and Jeff Salem, and presented live panel events at Musicians Institute (Los Angeles), Vic’s Drum Shop (Chicago), Humber College (Toronto), Berklee College of Music (Boston) and PASIC (Indianapolis).
SEN is open to all drum educators—from the private home studio teacher with a handful of students to a music school or educational institution—and provides a welcoming and inclusive forum for drum educators worldwide to exchange ideas and share skills.
