The Latin Roots Of Rock And Roll – Featuring Bobby Sanabria

On July 10th, Bobby Sanabria, multi-Grammy-nominated drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and educator, will lecture and demonstrate “The Latin Roots of Rock and Roll” at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Sanabria will be a special guest presenter for the Rock Hall’s annual Summer Teacher Institute (July 9-13), which draws educators and music specialists from across the U.S. and abroad (www.rockhall.com).

The term Rock and Roll came into vogue in the 1950’s to describe a music whose roots, fans, musicians, and historians have traditionally attributed to the Blues and R&B without also duly recognizing the roots in the music from south of the border. From its hypnotic bass lines, clave-based drum-set patterns, funky guitar and piano riffs, melodies, and, yes, its dance styles as well, the DNA of rock and roll has much to do with all things Latin.

Bobby will focus on how Latin music performance, rhythms, history, etc. relate to the rock continuum. He will also provide advice, instruction, and materials for the educators to take back to their students in the classroom to further their understanding of this unique historical and cultural relationship.

The session, made possible by The Roberto Ocasio Foundation, will also include examples by students and faculty from the 8th Annual Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Camp where Bobby is Artist-In-Residence, July 8-13, at Cleveland State University. Camp applications are still being accepted!

A free public Latin Jazz Concert with students and faculty under the direction of Bobby Sanabria will take place on July 13th at 7pm at the Cleveland State University Music Building (Drinko Hall at Euclid & E. 21st in downtown Cleveland).
