Brooks Truly is a freelance percussionist/drummer in the Miami Metro Area, a private percussion instructor, and an adjunct percussion instructor at the Palmer Trinity School, in Palmetto Bay, FL., the Florida Christian School, in Miami, FL., the Westminster Christian School, in Miami, FL., and The New World School of the Arts in Miami, FL. where he also teaches Music Theory.
Brooks currently performs with the Florida Grand Opera, the Boca Raton Philharmonic Symphonia, and is a mentor in the Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has served as the principal percussionist of both the Mobile and Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestras, the latter of which he was a featured marimba soloist. In addition to these two orchestras, Brooks has also performed with the Mobile and the Pensacola Operas, the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, the Jofferey Ballet, the American Ballet Theatre, the Miami City Ballet, the Florida Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony among others.
As a percussionist/drummer, Brooks has had the opportunity to perform with such artists as Lil Greenwood, Bobby Shew, Louis Bellson, Sherwood Mobley, Jim Walker, Yo-Yo Ma, Michel Camilo, Samuel Ramey, Andrea Bocelli, Marcello Giordani, The Ramsey Lewis Trio, Paul Potts, Faith Hill, and Elvis Costello, to name a few, and has worked with such conductors/composers as Scott Speck, Peter Rubardt, John Strickler, David LaMarche, Aaron Kula, Stewart Robertson, Steven Mercurio, Alexander Platt, Helmuth Rilling, Sir Andrew Davis, Michael Tilson Thomas, Russell Peck, and Phillip Glass, among others.
Brooks holds a BM degree in Percussion Performance from the University of South Alabama, a MM degree in Percussion Performance from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, and a DMA degree in Percussion Performance from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, where he was Ney Rosauro’s Graduate Teaching Assistant.
