Released in March 2026, this episode of the SABIAN Podcast welcomed drummer Jess Bowen, best known for her work with pop-rock band The Summer Set, for a conversation hosted by our very own Stacey Montgomery-Clark, Senior Vice President Sales & Marketing. During this heart-to-heart, Jess reflects on her early years as a drummer, what nearly two decades of touring has taught her, and why seeing more women behind the kit still matters.
Jess has spent most of her adult life on the road, touring arenas, recording albums, and building a career that started with a simple push from her dad to try the drums.
What followed was a lifelong connection to rhythm, performance, and the community that surrounds drumming.
From School Band to International Tours
Jess’ father was a drummer, and although Jess originally wanted to play guitar, she agreed to try percussion in the school band first. That one year behind the drums changed everything.
Jess eventually formed a band with friends that began as a cover project, playing pop-punk staples. That band eventually evolved into The Summer Set. Shortly after finishing high school, the group signed to a record label and hit the road. Touring quickly became the rhythm of life. For Jess, the cycle became familiar; release an album, hit the road, connect with audiences, repeat…
Finding Confidence in a Male-Dominated Industry
When Jess first started playing drums at the age of ten, she didn’t see many women behind drum kits. Her initial reaction was, “Girls don’t play drums.”
Of course, that perception has changed over the years. Today there are more women than ever performing as touring drummers, educators, and recording artists, but Jess believes visibility still matters.
Advice for the Next Generation of Drummers
Throughout the conversation, Jess keeps returning to one core message: Don’t let fear stop you. Opportunities in music can feel intimidating, whether it’s auditioning for a band, stepping onto a big stage, or trying something new. But growth rarely happens inside your comfort zone.
“The most intimidating opportunities often lead to the biggest breakthroughs.”
Be authentic, be bold, and don’t be afraid to fail. Failure, after all, is often the first step toward success.
