Gary Husband is one of a rare breed of musicians in that his expression is divided equally in his capacity as a drummer and a pianist and keyboardist of international repute. His classical roots, his quest and development in the improvisational, jazz and jazz/fusion areas – not to mention his tenure in the pop, rock, funk and blues circuits – are all evident inside Gary’s distinct and far-reaching musical personality. His solo album and DVD output has also reinforced his status as a critically acclaimed writer and arranger in the contemporary music world.
Gary was a member for 16 years of John McLaughlin’s group The 4th Dimension. He has recently been working with Bill Evans’ All-Star Vans Band, Robben Ford, and his duet with guitarist Nguyên Lê. He has been a member of many of Billy Cobham’s bands, worked alongside guitarist Allan Holdsworth for over three decades, performed and recorded with the British pop/funk band Level 42, various lineups led of Jack Bruce and two lineups of guitarist Gary Moore’s groups.
For close to five decades Gary has worked alongside a vast and eclectic range of celebrated musicians including Chick Corea, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, Jan Gunnar Hoff, Lenny White, fusion/jam band Gongzilla, Randy Brecker, Soft Machine Legacy, Foley, Al Jarreau, Hessischer Rundfunk Big Band, Sir George Martin, Quincy Jones, Eddie Jobson and John Wetten’s UK, Mike Stern, Dean Brown, Dewa Budjana, Jan Hammer, drum n’ bass protagonists Lemon ‘D’ and Dillinja, Jerry Goodman, Jack DeJohnette, Tony Levin, Jimmy Haslip, bassist/composer Antoine Fafard, John Patitucci and Dave Weckl. He also works regularly with Germany’s Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) Big Band.
As a leader, composer and solo artist Gary has fronted his own groups New Gary Husband Trio, Gary Husband’s Force Majeure, jazz group Gary Husband’s Drive and The Trackers – a project he co-led with Norwegian guitarist Alf Terje Hana.
As an internationally established drum clinician he has performed alongside Dennis Chambers, Antonio Sanchez, JoJo Mayer, Anika Nilles, Dave Weckl, David Garibaldi, Larnell Lewis, Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, Billy Cobham, Simon Phillips, Omar Hakim, Ricky Lawson, Todd Sucherman, Paul Wertico, Denny Seiwell and Bernard Purdie. Singularly he has developed his own series of educational/motivational presentations in drumming (The Gary Husband Drum Videocasts).
Husband is currently working with Billy Cobham’s Time Machine formations and has recently formed his own new group Gary Husband & the Orbital Band.
